Biyu’s Story

homeaid-orange-county

Biyu first came to the HomeAid-built housing project operated by Radiant Futures with only a few diapers for her 6-month-old son and one small bag of clothing. She had fled her home in the middle of the night after her husband attacked her while she was putting her son to bed.

Because of her limited English, Biyu had trouble finding the help she needed but she was ultimately connected to HomeAid nonprofit partner Radiant Futures. Biyu and her son first took up residence in the Radiant Futures emergency shelter, then in the bridge housing program.

She worked with advocates to get a restraining order against her husband, tailored her resume to find a sustainable job, secured a daycare, took her son to his one-year check-up, and started her job search. Amid all of these efforts, Biyu did not have to worry about affording diapers or wipes for her young son because it was provided to her through HomeAid’s annual Diaper Drive, which supports our nonprofit partners like Radiant Futures.

Later on, Biyu and her son graduated from the bridge housing program and into an apartment of their own. Her son was starting to walk and Biyu had found a stable job to support their new life.
