Byron’s Story

Like many who end up unfortunately experiencing homelessness, Byron never intended to be without a place to call home.

A former Marine who went to the middle east and was stationed at 29 Palms for the duration of his military career, Byron is a hard worker who loves his country. After he left the Marines, Byron moved to Los Angeles. He found odds and ends jobs but never anything stable. After leaving one job and not being able to find work soon after, Byron began experiencing homelessness for the first time.

Originally from Orange County, Byron thought there might be better job opportunities here. So, he made the move down the 5 freeway to the OC. Unfortunately for Byron, none of the opportunities he had hoped for panned out and his homelessness continued.

Early in 2021, after spending time at other housing options he had found his way to in Orange County, Byron made his way to one of HomeAid Orange County’s largest housing developments in its history: a 425-bed emergency shelter for adults, located in Santa Ana.

“It’s a tight-knit community…we know each other,” Byron says of the community in the HomeAid housing development.

As he looks at his future, while working with both the housing and career navigators at the facility, Byron says that he feels excited about the prospect of what’s to come.

“The opportunity to establish myself and to get better; that’s what I’m excited about it.”
